Living in a house has its own pros and cons. One of the cons, sadly, is the considerate number of bugs in the garden. And it is not only the hard-working bees that come to pollinate your orchards and flowers. There are also mosquitoes, moths, beetles and the worse of all, ants. They can be hard to deal with because of their size, number and persistence. Sometimes they simply seem to be invincible. Whatever you do to stop ants from coming inside the house- all the sprays and insecticides – seem to keep them away for a few days or a week.
Stop Ants from Coming in the House
What is even worse about having ants in your garden, eating your flowers and veggies, is the fact that they also get inside your home. It is not enough for them to attack your beautiful flowers and circle around the patio in search for crumbs, but they always seem to find their way into your home.
The long colony that they form until they reach a place they know has food for them, is gross and unsightly. They can get inside cupboards and pantries with food and into packages. It is not only annoying to have ants that spoil your food but if you have pets or babies in your home, a second of not paying attention can result in the baby or the pet eating some of them. And this problem only gets worse if you have sprayed some powder or liquid poison to kill the ants…
There are a lot more ways to keep your garden and your home free from ants that are safer. Insecticides seem to work for a short period of time or you might not want to use them in a home with pets or babies. When this is the case – try some of the following eco-friendly and natural ways to stop ants from coming in the house.
What Stops Ants Naturally?
There are a lot of natural scents that ants do not like and will stay away from them. But the first thing you need to do is find their entry points and seal them. Use a sealant that is suitable for the material in which the hole is. You can use essential oils to prevent ants from getting into your home. And here are some essential oils and other natural solutions to stop ants from coming in the house.
Tip #1 Vinegar and lemon juice. One way to keep ants from entering your home is to make a homemade ant repellent of a half and half mixture of vinegar and water. Spray around your patio, around their entry points and paths. Both vinegar and lemon juice erase the traces and the smell of food.
Tip #2 for eradicating ants in your garden is – if there is a nest – to pour boiling water inside of it. This will instantly kill all ants that are inside, possibly including the queen of the nest. She produces large numbers of ants and killing her will save your garden from the pests. Then you can proceed to use preventive measures.
Tip #3 Coffee grounds – sprinkle some around your garden and near your house. The smell of coffee is not pleasant to them and will ward off ants naturally. The coffee is safe for the plants and for your pets.
Tip #4 Cinnamon – Use ground cinnamon and sprinkle it around their entry points or if you have a cinnamon essential oil you can spray with it as well. Other spices and herbs black pepper, cayenne pepper, whole cloves.
Tip #5 Essential oils that can be used for the same purpose are – peppermint oil, cinnamon oils. Mix with water and spray the area. The essential oils will also be better if you want to wipe the surfaces in your home.
When you have taken care of your problem and the ants are out of your house you need to take some preventive measures to keep them out. You can keep using the coffee grounds to limit their access to your garden but there are also some other ways to make sure no ants come near your garden or home. And for even better results you can:
Tip #6 Use citrus peels – ground the peels of citrus fruits and mix them with the coffee grounds. Then sprinkle the mix in your garden. Using only the peels should help as well.
Tip #7 Plants to have – There are certain plants that you can plant in your garden that have a certain smell that stops ants naturally. Chrysanthemums, thyme, rosemary, peppermint, basil, even lavender and garlic would help the case. Having them in a few corners in your garden should naturally keep the ants away.
Tip #8 Plants to remove – The ants are drawn to the sweetness of some flowers’ nectar and will circle around it. Peonies, for example, are one of the flowers that can cause a large colony of ants to settle down in your garden. If you love your peonies, though, and do not want to get rid of them, cut the flower when it starts to bloom to prevent the ants from infesting it. Take a look at your flowers and if there are other ones that draw ants, get rid of as many as you can.
Tip #9 Keep clean – Do not leave your dustbin full for too long. Wipe down your table and counter carefully so you do not leave traces and smells. Sweep your floors well. These are some basic things that can stop ants naturally.
Tip #10 Baits – You can use baits after you have a problem or you can use them to prevent any infestation in your home. Simply, put the baits outside of your home near their entry points. And to make a natural bait, you will need water, sugar and borax – all natural products that are efficient. Mix equal parts borax and sugar and add a little bit of water. The sugar attracts them and the borax will kill them.
Keep in mind that while they are a nuisance in your home, ants are useful in the garden. So, the best thing you can do is try to keep only your home or your patio ants-free. Ants aerate the soil and feed off some pests’ larvae, so they can be quite helpful to you. But the above listed homemade ant repellents should help keep them outside of your home. But if you cannot handle the infestation you should seek professional help.
